Igitur is an album that leaves me with more questions than answers. Questions like “what am I listening to” and “where can I find more music like this”. Sea Mosquito have created an unsettling, engaging and immersive style of music that isn’t all that easy to explain or define. At best I would attempt to call it industrial black metal, but that only explains a portion of what’s going on. You’ll also find harsh noise, ambient, folk and more jammed into this mix. There’s an equal focus on haunting atmosphere and blunt force dissonance. It almost feels like being beaten over the head while in the process of drowning.

Igitur is an album that leaves me with more questions than answers. Questions like “what am I listening to” “what does the band’s name mean”, “what is the album cover” and “where can I find more music like this”. 

Sea Mosquito have created an unsettling, engaging and immersive style of music that isn’t all that easy to explain or define. At best I would attempt to call it industrial black metal, but that only explains a portion of what’s going on. You’ll also find harsh noise, ambient, folk and more jammed into this mix. There’s an equal focus on haunting atmosphere and blunt force dissonance. It almost feels like being beaten over the head while in the process of drowning. 

The vocals are definitely some of the most unsettling elements on the album, ranging from sinister snarls, haunting whispers, and raw shrieks to commanding spoken cleans with an almost gothic tone and crazed laughter. These vocals live within the mix, at times breaking out and dominating the sonic landscape. However at other times they remain hidden within the soundscape, coming across as an even more menacing force.

To some extent I’m reminded of an obscure underground artist called Morgul who I always thought deserved more praise and attention. However I feel like Sea Mosquito take a less melodic approach, with their work, as they focus on atmosphere and abrasiveness instead. Having said that, there are moments of crisp clean guitar that cuts through the mix like a hot knife through butter and makes its way directly into the listeners ears. The contrast of the harsher, dirtier guitars that precede and follow, as well as sometimes accompanying it amplify its effects even further.

There’s something else at play here though, a residual déjà vu like feeling achieved thanks to repetitive looping, an effect that may be less used than it appears, but is highly effective regardless. The key effect of this is that it strips the listener of any concept of time with each track and makes them question whether or not elements seem familiar, a thoroughly disorienting effect.

The release is well balanced by its track listing, with longer more drawn out tracks straddling shorter punchier offerings. That isn’t to say that either track type isn’t harsh and abbrasive, its simply the way that they express this that changes. Each track has a slightly different sound and flow and I think that’s part of what I love about the release.

As a whole the album is an immense offering of harsh experimentation and some may find it difficult to enjoy in one listen, but for those who enjoy auditory abuse and bands that choose to take chances and colour outside of the lines, this album will be highly enjoyable.
