You can immediately perceive a classic sound, analogue, with repetitive, catchy, slow and heavy riffs, accompanied by very cool guitar solos, that is to say, this band makes pretty classic stoner/doom music, with an occult, dark and psychedelic theme. Despite only having a short four song runtime, the variety makes it enjoyably eclectic in terms of rhythms and sensations.

A couple of weeks ago the Italian band Dark Shaman presented their debut production consisting of four pretty good tracks. The Stoner/doom power trio is composed by Seby on guitar and vocals, Dario on bass and Alberto on drums and cymbals, and it’s a band in which you can immediately notice the vintage seventies influence, both in the sound and in the composition and resources used. You can immediately perceive a classic sound, analogue, with repetitive, catchy, slow and heavy riffs, accompanied by very cool guitar solos, that is to say, this band makes pretty classic stoner/doom music, with an occult, dark and psychedelic theme. So let’s see each track that makes up this debut EP that has left me with a good taste in my mouth.

From the cover you can already tell that Dark Shaman’s main objective is to be linked to all that is paranormal, dark, forbidden, demonic, and the first track, Black Skull, already starts with this sensation: the sample of a girl singing with a delay effect that gives it a touch even more of ultratomb, immediately, the instruments sound with a hard hit of density and fuzz. It is a powerful and hard intro, that suddenly changes to guitar that gives a new riff, the main one, with a very lugeríssimo touch of fuzz and wah. The bass and drums gradually follow until, after a new pause, now the song starts with a very seventies riff. Dark and gloomy at the same time, the voice has a bit of chorus, it gives the feeling that it speaks from beyond, from that dark corner where we can’t see where and from what or who the voice comes from. The lyre solo, which has tremolo instead of simple fuzz or distortion, seems to me a great way to give power to that supernatural feel of the song and make it stand out from the whole song.

Horror Night starts with the bass with wah, making the initial riff of the song, to after a couple of repetitions, start the lyre and drums also with the intro of the song, which sounds closer to Stoner than doom, because the sound has lost a little of that gloomy atmosphere, leaving only the heavy and with a more moving, harder feeling, it’s almost as if we were going from a Dario Argento’s movie to a Wes Craven’s one: you still feel the horror and the dark, a fear inspired by the paranoia of the unknown, but in a different way.

Sign of the Wizard, the third track of the EP, starts fast (in comparison to the two previous tracks), with a succession of chords and riffs that brings it very close to 80’s Stoner rock/grunge/hardcore, but without losing that hard and heavy sound. The song still keeps that macabre dark touch, but with another rhythmic register and notes that, good or bad, give a sensation closer to the out of control than to the gloomy.

Lastly, Acid Addict is a song that starts with a very cool dark psychedelia, which reminds me of the greats of the dark psychedelia or Stoner/doom genre. With very few variations, the whole song is basically built with the same riff and slight variations of it, but keeping its essence, as well as including a pretty cool wah solo that adds a lot to the dark psychedelia they have created in this song. It is not the first nor the only band that has made a long song with the constant repetition of a riff (and with few variations), I remember mainly Empress Rising, by Monolord (one of my favourites of this style), in which the constant repetition creates a trance in the listener and at the end, many doom bands use this resource in their songs: hypnotic riffs that last long and keep us moving our heads concentrated in that monotonous rhythm that has trapped us.

To culminate, although it has a constant sound that gives cohesion to the EP, it is clear that each song has its own identity and oscillates between the variants of Stoner and doom, so that, despite the short (four songs), the variety makes it enjoyably eclectic in terms of rhythms and sensations; personally, Horror Night seemed to me the best track, what is your favourite?

La banda italiana Dark Shaman presentó hace un par de semanas su producción debut compuesta de cuatro rolas bastante buenas. El power trío de Stoner/doom está compuesto por Seby en guitarra y voces, Dario en el bajo y Alberto en los tambores y platillos, y es una agrupación en la que se nota de inmediato la influencia vintage setentera, tanto en el sonido como en la composición y recursos usados, pues de inmediato se percibe un sonido clásico, análogo, con riffs repetitivos, pegadizos, lentos y pesados, acompañados de solos de lira muy chingones, es decir, esta banda hace un Stoner/doom bastante clásico en lo músical, con temática ocultista, oscura y psicodélica, así que veamos cada track que compone este Ep debut que me ha dejado con buen sabor de boca.

            Desde la portada ya se nota que el principal objetivo de Dark Shaman es vincularse con todo aquello paranormal, lo oscuro, lo prohibido, lo demoniaco, y la primera rola, Black skull, ya inicia con esta sensación: el sample de una niña cantando con efecto de delay que le da un toque aún más de ultratumba, de inmediato, suenan los instrumentos con un golpe duro de densidad y fuzz, se trata de un intro potente y duro, que de pronto cambia por una lira que da un nuevo riff, el principal, con un lugerísimo toque de fuzz y wah, de a poco bajo y batería van secundando hasta que, luego de una nueva pausa, ahora sí la rola comienza con un riff bien setentero a la vez que oscuro y lóbrego, la voz tiene un poco de chorus, da la sensación de que habla desde el más allá, desde ese rincón oscuro en el que no podemos ver de dónde y de qué o quién proviene la voz. El solo de lira, que tiene trémolo en lugar de simple fuzz o distorsión, me parece una forma estupenda de darle potencia a esa sensación sobrenatural de la canción y de hacer que sobresalga de toda la rola. Horror night inicia con el bajo con wah, haciendo el riff inicial de la canción, para luego de un par de repeticiones, comenzar lira y batería también con el intro de la rola, que suena más cerca del Stoner que del doom, pues el sonido ha perdido un poco de ese ambiente tétrico, quedando un poco sólo lo pesado y con una sensación más movida, más dura, es casi como si pasáramos de una peli de Darío Argento a una de Wes Craven: se sigue sintiendo el horror y lo oscuro, un temor inspirado en la paranoia de lo desconocido, pero de manera distinta.

            Sign of the wizard, el tercer track del Ep, comienza veloz (en comparación a las dos rolas anteriores), con una sucesión de acordes y riffs que lo acerca mucho al Stoner rock/grunge/hardcore ochentero, pero sin perder ese sonido duro y pesado, por lo que la rola aún conserva ese toque oscuro macabro, pero con otro registro rítmico y de notas que, bien que mal, dan una sensación más cerca del descontrol que de lo tétrico. Por último, Acid addict es una rola que inicia con una psicodelia oscura muy chingona, que me recuerda a grandes del género de la psicodelia oscura o el Stoner/doom. Con poquísimas variaciones, toda la rola se construye básicamente con el mismo riff y ligeras variaciones del mismo, pero conservando su esencia, además de incluir un solo con wah bastante chido y que aporta mucho a la psicodelia oscura que han creado en esta rola. No es la primera ni la única banda que ha hecho una canción larga con la repetición constante de un riff (y con pocas variaciones), recuerdo principalmente Empress rising, de Monolord (una de mis favoritas de este estilo), en la que la repetición constante crea un trance en el escucha y al final, muchas bandas de doom usan este recurso en sus canciones: riffs hipnóticos que duran mucho y nos mantienen moviendo la cabeza concentrados en ese ritmo monótono que nos ha atrapado. Para culminar, aunque tiene un sonido constante que le da cohesión al Ep, es claro que cada rola tiene una identidad propia y oscila entre las variantes del Stoner y el doom, con lo que, pese a lo breve (cuatro canciones), la variedad lo hacen ameno ecléctico en cuanto a ritmos y sensaciones; en lo personal, Horror night me pareció el mejor track, cuál es su favorito?
