Survival of the Sickest is ugly and big, bigger even than the bands previous album The Arrow of Satan is Drawn, each riff is catchier than the last. Almost reliving the days of Entombed, Bloodbath wastes no time blasting out one old school death metal jam after the next. With guest vocal spots by Barney Greenway (Napalm Death), Luc Lemay (Gorguts) and Marc Grewe (Morgoth) each and every track is a love letter to death metal of yor.
Nicholas Holmes (Paradise Lost) delivers his groaning, sickening delivery on every track, filling the listener with dread but also a clear enough vocalist that you can actually make out what’s being said, which is very different for a death metal release. The real centerpiece here is Martin Axenrot’s incredible drumming. Tight, loud and unrelenting throughout. Every track is nearly built on top of his tremendous skill.
Absolutely brutal in the most disgusting way possible, Survival of the Sickest is an absolute riff fest, Even channeling the catchiness of bands like Cannibal Corpse and Dismember, This album is proof that Bloodbath is more than a supergroup but an institution of Swedish death metal. Delivering on pure bloody death in 2022 is an absolute blast and one that I’m absolutely here for.
